Why Do People Get Bunions?
A bunion happens when the joint at the base of your big toe shifts out of place and creates a bump that can make walking uncomfortable.
Here are a few common reasons why people develop bunions:
- Genetics: Some people are just born with foot shapes that make bunions more likely. If others in your family have bunions, there’s a good chance you might get them, too. Flat feet or low arches can also lead to bunions over time.
- Footwear choices:Â Shoes that pinch your toes or push your weight onto the front of your foot can cause bunions. High heels and narrow dress shoes are often to blame.
- Repetitive stress:Â If you are on your feet a lot, play sports, or do activities that put pressure on your big toe joint, you could eventually develop a bunion.
- Medical conditions:Â Certain conditions, like rheumatoid arthritis, can damage the joint and soft tissues around your toe, which may lead to bunions.
Can You Prevent Bunions?
There is no guaranteed way to stop bunions from forming, especially if they run in your family. But there are things you can do that might lower your risk.
Wearing shoes that fit well and give your toes plenty of space is a good place to start. If you notice foot pain or see your toe starting to shift, it is smart to have it checked out early. In some cases, custom orthotics can help by taking pressure off the joint.
