How Total and Partial Knee Replacements Compare

A knee replacement is performed when arthritis or injury causes significant pain and loss of mobility. Total and partial knee replacements are both designed to help with those issues, but they are not the same procedure. 

The main differences come down to the following factors:

Extent of Surgery

In a total knee replacement, we resurface the entire joint with implants that replace damaged bone and cartilage in the femur, tibia, and sometimes the kneecap. 

For a partial knee replacement, we only replace the affected section of the joint, but leave the healthy areas intact.

Candidate Selection

Recovery

It typically takes longer to heal from a total replacement, since more of the joint is involved. Initial recovery takes about six to 12 weeks, with full recovery often around six months to one year.

A partial replacement may mean a shorter recovery period. Patients often walk with support the same day or within one to two days. Initial recovery is usually three to six weeks, with many fully healing in three to four months.

Longevity

Total knee implants often last 15–20 years with proper care. Partial replacements may not last as long (10-15 years) and sometimes require conversion to a total replacement later.
